שכונת הזיתים והטרור – רקע בעקבות החדשות הקשות משכונת זיתון להלן רקע אודותיה. שכונת זיתון (זית) היא שכונה בחלק הדרומי של העיר עזה. השם זיתון ניתן לה מאחר שבזמן הקמתה חלקים נרחבים ממנה היו מכוסים בעצי זית.
השכונה הוקמה החל משנות ה-30 של המאה הקודמת עם התרחבות העיר עזה. לאחר מלחמת העצמאות בשנת 1948 וזרם הפליטים גדלה אוכלוסיית השכונה. בין השאר משפחתו של מנהיג חמאס שיח' אחמד יאסין התיישבה בשכונה הזו.
שכונת זיתון היא הגדולה ביותר בעזה מבחינת שטחה – כ-9 קמ"ר. לפני המלחמה התגוררו בשכנות זיתון כ-80,000 פלסטינים ובכך היא דורגה שנייה מבחינה זו, אחרי שכונת שג'אעיה (110,000 פלסטינים).
לשכונת זיתון עבר עשיר בטרור נגד כוחות צה"ל. אחד הקשים ביותר אירע במאי 2004 אז נהרגו בשכונה "באסון הנגמ"שים" 6 חיילי צה"ל.
זיתון קרובה ל"ציר נצרים" שמחלק את הרצועה לצפון ולדרום ולכן חשיבות עקירת תשתית הטרור החמאסית בה.
